Born and raised in Memphis, Allison Read Smith comes from a creative and curious environment where story telling and a strong sense of humor allowed for long contemplations of elements of life.
In her art Allison uses mix media, collage, found objects and materials to create a unique and imaginary world where the objects that surround us take on a new and greater significance. Both naive and poignant, these odd scaled objects and their repetition form a witty and unsettling group, adding up to a larger narrative.
With Levity I, Allison Read Smith creates her first collection of wearable objects that can seem abstract and ambiguous when worn but come into focus once resting on a table. Sitting upright, form and function become apparent in a playful manner. Combined, they convey charade like messages.
Every wearable object in this collection is sculpted by hand as a unique piece. While pertaining to the same series, no two pieces are the same: these symbolic objects are each individually significant.
